HOW TO SHOP

1. This is not a time to "let your fingers do the walking."

The Yellow Pages is not the place to shop for a videographer. Get references from friends about the videographer's reliability, his attitude, his punctuality, and his degree of obtrusiveness. Nothing more. (It's up to YOU to decide how good their video is.)

2. Do not ask a photographer for a reference.

Why do brides and grooms erroneously believe that photography and videography are related art-forms? They are as different and as far removed as the profession of medicine is from law. Would you call McDonald's to cater your wedding? Of course not; they specialize in fast-food, not event catering. A photographer, experienced and trained in his art, knows nothing about video, unless they are also trained in that profession.

3. Make appointments to see videographers in all price ranges.

It's my advice that interviews are learning experiences. You should gain knowledge from each vendor whom you interview. They should explain what their goals are for you and your wedding. They should discuss technique, experience, expertise, training, and equipment. They should be up on the latest trends. They should give you a copy of a full-length video to take home and review and a copy of a highlight tape (a 20-30 minute recap of the affair).

THE POINT: If one videographer is more expensive than another, you should know and understand the reasons.
